Why Pilates Works
More conventional or traditional workouts are weight bearing and tend to build short, bulky muscles – the type most prone to injury. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured. Pilates hits your core unlike any other workout. After completing 36 weeks of Pilates training, subjects strengthened their rectus abdominis (the muscle responsible for six-packs) by an average of 20%. At the same time, eliminating muscle imbalances between the right and left sides of their cores, according to a Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise study.
It's Easy on Your Joints
Pilates' slow and controlled movements puts minimal impact on your joints. It is also a major bonus if you're using the Pilates reformer.
It Hones Your Focus
Pilates urges you to focus on your breath, body, and how they move together. It takes a lot of concentration, it can be easy to zone out during workouts. That means you're forced to forget about work, bills, boyfriends, and other drama for a full hour while focusing on your workout.
It Makes You More Flexible
People often make the excuse that they aren't flexible enough for yoga or Pilates. The truth is…those are the people that would benefit most from Pilates. When you're tight, you shorten your muscle and limit your body's range of motion. In one Brazilian study, they performed 20 Pilates sessions, subjects reported they became 19.1 percent more flexible.
Meet Our Instructors
Véronique Dumont-Thoma – Véronique’s first Pilates Method experience was over 12 years ago to relieve back and posture problems when she worked at UCSF’s Center of Excellence for Women’s Health. Before founding Soulful Pilates, Véronique worked at UCSF's Mission Bay Physical Therapy Department where she gained practical knowledge by observing patients with various physical conditions. She also studied pilates-based physical rehabilitation with Lizz Roman. Véronique is very excited about offering a wide range of Pilates-based training programs to clients at the crossroad of the upper Haight/Ashbury/Cole Valley neighborhoods and appreciates the contining support she has received from the community.
Diana Broker – Diana was first introduced to Pilates as a modern dance student at San Francisco State University. After realizing how beneficial the method was for maintaining core stability and spinal alignment, she carried the practice with her into the world of professional modern dance. She was certified as a Pilates trainer through the Integrated Teacher Training Program in San Francisco in 2008 and continues to teach at various studios in the city. When not teaching, Diana can be seen performing, reading, enjoying nature and studying anatomy. She is grateful for the ability to share her love of movement and well being with her students.
